Bluebirds - history of these beautiful birds, their present demise and how we can help them.

Bluebirds have called America their home for quite a long time.  In fact, Henry David Thoreau, a naturalist and writer born in 1817 provided some of the earliest record about bluebirds.  In his journals, Thoreau writings talk about eastern bluebirds returning to their boxes.  This is clear evidence that as early as the 1800's and perhaps even earlier, people were already building and providing nesting boxes for bluebirds. These days, the introduction of  two bird species from Europe - the house sparrow in 1850 and the starling in 1890 are resulting in the loss of suitable habitat for bluebirds.  Starlings and house sparrows compete for the same habitat, forcing bluebirds out of their spaces and at times even killing them.  Today, we can enjoy the company of these beautiful birds while helping them by providing nesting boxes for them.

Placing a bluebird house near an orchard, field, or park will increase your chances of bringing in bluebirds. Bluebirds also like abandoned woodpecker nest holes. A very important issue here is the diameter of the hole. An inch and a half is large enough to enable entry for blue birds and at the same time small enough to deter starlings - these and house sparrows have been known to kill baby bluebirds as well as adults sitting on the nest. To deter attacks from predatory cats, snakes, raccoons, and chipmunks is to mount the house on a metal pole, or use a metal predator guard on a wood post.
